Safely Lifting Boxes: The Borgas Way

Moving furniture and appliances can involve plenty of lifting, carrying and manoeuvring, particularly when you're getting your belongings ready for collection. While Borgas Removals takes care of the transport, knowing how to lift safely when preparing for a move can help reduce the risk of injury and make moving day easier.

Whether you're moving locally, relocating between regional South Australian towns or planning an interstate move, safe lifting techniques are important whenever you need to move a box, appliance or other household item.

Why Safe Lifting Matters

Moving house can be physically demanding. Boxes can vary significantly in size and weight, and some household items can be awkward to grip or difficult to manoeuvre through doorways and around furniture.

Trying to lift something that is too heavy for you, lifting with your back instead of your legs, or carrying an item too far away from your body can increase the risk of strains and other injuries.

Before lifting anything, take a moment to consider its weight, size and shape. If an item is too heavy or awkward to move safely, don't try to lift it on your own. Ask someone for assistance or consider whether professional help is needed.

Six Safe Lifting Tips

When you need to lift a box or household item, keep these basic techniques in mind.

  1. Plant Your Feet
  2. Position your feet approximately shoulder-width apart before you lift. A stable stance gives you better balance and helps you maintain control of the item.
  3. Get a Strong Grip
  4. Use your full hands rather than trying to lift an item with just your fingertips. A secure grip can help you maintain control as you lift and carry.
  5. Keep the Item Close to Your Body
  6. Once you have a secure grip, keep the box or item as close to your body as practical. Holding a heavy object away from your body can place additional strain on your back and shoulders.
  7. Bend Your Knees and Keep Your Back Straight
  8. Lower yourself by bending your knees rather than bending forward from your waist. Keep your back in a stable, neutral position and use your legs to help lift.
  9. Lift in a Controlled Movement
  10. Avoid sudden or jerking movements. Lift smoothly and steadily, keeping the item under control as you move into an upright position.
  11. Reverse the Process When Putting It Down
  12. When you're ready to place the item down, don't simply bend forward and drop it. Keep the item close to your body, bend your knees and lower it in a controlled movement.
  13. Know Your Limits
  14. Safe lifting isn't just about using the correct technique. It's also about knowing when not to lift something yourself.

If a box or household item feels too heavy, awkward or difficult to control, stop and reassess the situation. Getting another person to help can make a significant difference.

The same applies to large household appliances and bulky furniture. Their size and shape can make them difficult to handle safely, even when they don't seem particularly heavy.

Borgas Removals focuses on the transportation of household furniture and appliances. We don't handle business equipment, and we don't provide packing services. Customers should have their household items ready for pickup when the removal is scheduled.

Preparing for Your Borgas Pickup

A little preparation before pickup can help make the moving process smoother.

Where possible, make sure furniture and appliances can be accessed safely and that pathways, doorways and other areas needed to remove the items are clear.

If you're moving household furniture or appliances between Adelaide and regional South Australia, or arranging an interstate move, having everything ready for collection can help the pickup run efficiently.

Remember that Borgas Removals provides the pickup and transportation of your household furniture and appliances. Packing and preparing your belongings is the customer's responsibility.

Moving Safely Starts Before Pickup

Moving doesn't begin when the removal truck arrives. Preparing your belongings and considering how they will be moved can help make the day safer and more organised.

Use proper lifting techniques, don't attempt to move items that are beyond your capabilities, and ask for assistance when necessary.

Whether you're moving across town, between regional South Australian locations or interstate, taking a little extra care when handling household items can help protect you and your belongings.

When your furniture and appliances are ready for pickup, Borgas Removals can take care of the transportation so you can focus on settling into your next home. An Experience That Moves You.
